The Corona autumn wave continues to rise; in the past week alone, there were nearly 95,000 more infected people across Austria – with significantly lower testing numbers than last October. According to AGES, fifteen thousand ninety-nine new infections were registered in the past 24 hours. Hospitals added 78 positive patients, and authorities also reported 15 more deaths. There were now 139,282 laboratory-confirmed, actively infected people across Austria.

That is more than Innsbruck has, with a population of about 130,000. Since the end of the quarantine obligation more than two months ago, only the so-called traffic restrictions have applied to infected persons. In their preview on Wednesday, the forecasting experts already expected a further increase in the number of cases and hospitals.

The 15,099 new infections are well above the average of the past seven days (13,520). The seven-day incidence rose to 1,048.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, highest in Tyrol with 1,230.5, Upper Austria with 1,216.6, and Salzburg with 1,167.8. Only four provinces are still in triple digits, albeit at a high level. Since the start of the pandemic, there have already been 5,226,219 confirmed cases in Austria.

In the hospital, 2,194 infected persons must be treated; around 78 more than on the previous day were reported. In the past week alone, 704 positive patients were added – an increase of 47 percent. Ninety-eight critically ill patients are being cared for in intensive care units, down by two from Thursday.

Meanwhile, the number of Corona deaths is on the rise again. In the past seven days, 46 deaths have been recorded. The week before, there had been 36 deaths. The Covid 19 pandemic has claimed 20,809 victims in Austria since it broke out. Per 100,000 population, 230.5 people have already died from or with Covid-19.

158,457 PCR and rapid antigen tests were reported in the past 24 hours. Of these, 124,911 were conclusive PCR tests, and the positive rate was 12.1 percent. However, in some cases, minimal testing is done in the individual states, which is also reflected in the positive momentum. For example, on Thursday in Vorarlberg, there were only 358 PCR analyses per 100,000 inhabitants – the positive rate was 40.9 percent. On average, it was a proud 39.6 percent in the entire past week in the westernmost province. Upper Austria also tests very little – yesterday, for example, only 453 PCR tests per 100,000 inhabitants, which translates into a positive rate of 43.5 percent. Over the past seven days, 37.3 percent of PCR analyses were positive in Upper Austria. By far, most tests are carried out – as usual – in Vienna. For example, on Thursday, there were 3,622 PCR analyses per 100,000 inhabitants with a correspondingly low positive rate of 4.8 percent. On average, 4.3 percent of PCR analyses were positive in the federal capital last week.

Meanwhile, the demand for (booster) vaccinations continues to rise. One hundred five thousand seven hundred fifty-one stings were administered last week, of which 20,473 were done on Thursday. The majority were booster vaccinations (4th, 5th, and each subsequent dose), with 18,768. A total of 799,068 people have received booster vaccinations to date.
